How much does grade and purity actually affect the price for the same metal?

Short answer: Significantly — the benchmark price assumes pure, refined metal, so contamination, mixed alloys, coatings, attached non-metal components, and general impurity all reduce what a buyer can realistically pay, sometimes substantially, which is why two loads of the "same" metal can receive very different offers depending on how clean and well-sorted each one actually is.

Why purity assumptions matter so much

The benchmark price is for a specific, defined level of purity — any deviation from that (alloying, coatings, contamination) means the buyer is receiving something worth less than that reference standard, and pricing has to reflect that.
